Three local golfers advance to USGA championships

Harbor High sophomore Cory McElyea became the latest to qualify for a USGA Championship this summer. McElyea earned medalist honors at the U.S. Junior Am qualifier at Stanford golf course on Monday. He advances to the championship at Shoal Creek in Birmingham, Ala., on July 21-26.

On Thursday, Watsonville’s Les Teuteberg advanced out of a qualifier at Coyote Creek to reach the U.S. Am Pub Links Championship. That championship runs July 14-19 at Murphy Creek Golf Course in Aurora, Co.

Aptos’ Eddie Olson is exempt for qualifying at the U.S. Amateur because he was a quarterfinalist in match play last summer at the Olympic Club. This year’s U.S. Am will be held at Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina on Aug. 18-24.
