Harbor’s McElyea poised to make history

Harbor High sophomore Cory McElyea has a chance to become the youngest player from Santa Cruz County to win the CIF state championship in golf on June 3. The event will be held at Santa Maria Country Club.

McElyea shot an even-par 70 at Richmond Country Club on Monday to advance from the Nor Cal Championships.

Only two others from the area have won high school state titles. Aptos’ Eddie Olson last accomplished the feat in 2004 at Santa Maria C.C. — as a junior. He is now a sophomore on UNLV’s team. And before that, Harbor’s Tim Loustalot won state in 1983 as a senior at Pebble Beach Golf Links. Loustalot went on to play on the PGA.
