There’s a section in the new photography book “California Trip” in which photographers Richard Blair and Kathleen Goodwin document the “four corners” of California — northeast in the thinly populated volcanic country of Lassen County; northwest in the redwoods near Crescent City; southeast at the Colorado River and southwest at the flashpoint border between the U.S. and Mexico.
It’s a fitting reminder that “California Trip” covers this state with a thoroughness not found in a lot of California coffee-table books. Here are the common images of Yosemite and Death Valley and the Golden Gate Bridge. But this book attempts to wrap its vision around both the natural splendor of the Golden State and its cultural heritage as well.
Blair first came to California at the height of the Sixties counterculture in 1969; Goodwin five years later. As a result, “California Trip” is rife with historical images of the hippie era, balanced by other chapters on the California wine country, the heartland culture of interior California, inner-city life, and big historical events including the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake and the 1994 Oakland fires.
We’ve included a taste of the images in this slideshow. To learn more about “California Trip,” go to www.BlairGoodwinGallery.com.
